A simple 5x7 ink drawing done as a Christmas gift for my good friend Jordan Hufnagel. West America is a weird place and Jordan appreciates the strangest, funniest, most ridiculous parts of it.
The second project I did with the boys down at Golden Saddle Cyclery in Los Angeles. These aren’t just bottles, they’re vessels! The design is inspired by native Acoma pottery patterns dating back 800 years. Even when the design is newly painted and updated to include the subtle “G”, “S”, “C” it stays true to the history of these shapes and the pottery it has adorned for centuries.
The pattern was first hand drawn and then painted in ink to closely recreate a similar technique as the acoma potters used. Staying true to the process ensures that the lines and shapes also remain true. Ink was ultimately digitized before the good people over at Specialized printed the bottles. All in all a great project from start to finish.

An artful shot of the translucent grey bottle with tonal black print.
At the beginning of this past summer my good buddies Kyle, Ty and Woody opened up what has already become the best bike shop in LA, Golden Saddle Cyclery. To commemorate the occasion I made them a drawing with a traditional Japanese Maneki Neko cat, commonly seen in shops to bring in good luck and lots of money! Of course I had to have a little fun with the message, but then we decided to make a more culturally sensitive version for the first set of shop t-shirts. The first run sold out almost instantly. A second edition is available now!
From Kyle, via Trackosaurus Rex:
One of the first shop-warming gifts we received here at GSC was a framed drawing of a Maneki Neko kitty on a sweet vintage Track Bike beckoning us all to come along for the ride and that we did. Golden Saddle Cyclery has now been open for six months and we’re alive and well(just a little tired). So we wanted to honor this particular Maneki Neko kitty by printing it onto a t-shirt for all to wear. Printed in the US on American Apparel Tri-Blend Track tees(arguably the most comfortable tee made here in the US)!

Original artwork created for ART IS FOREVER, a project created by Jason Sturgill as part of the Portland Art Museum’s SHINE A LIGHT, 2011. Jason walked me through the museum and then sent me off to draw what I saw. He only asked for two or three drawings, but there was so much good stuff in there that a couple quickly grew to a dozen. I have a plenty of weird tattoos and even a couple plain old dumb ones, but the idea that anyone would want to get any of these tattooed on them is a whole other level of looney in my mind. All the same, thanks to everyone who came out and did in fact choose to mark themselves with my scribble.

A full listing of the drawings included in ART IS FOREVER, a project by Jason Sturgill at the Portland Art Museum’s SHINE A LIGHT, 2011. It was very rad to have been part of such a good group of artists.

Pieces disappeared off the wall as soon as the auction ended so I failed to get a respectable shot of the dozen hanging together. This composite is the best I have found thus far. You get the idea.

Ink on paper. Sold at Midnight Adventures, A Benefit for Kevin Nimick, at Together Gallery. September, 2011. I recently finished a series of drawings based around, for lack of a more succinct term, disposable images. By that I mean very simple, straightforward images that are either common or overlooked as a small part of every day. These images are ornament at a base level. They are a thread in the larger fabric of a shared visual language. Presented in flash style pages, these drawings attempt to remove all context and utility from these images and allow them to be enjoyed simply for what they are. I was very excited to contribute to a group show to benefit my friend Kevin Nimick’s continued recovery from testicular cancer. This set of a dozen drawings all sold that evening. I’m really looking forward to making more of these.
